Don't trust your wordpress plugins... [...]

Unfortunately I am a trusting person…. usually… I trust people until they have proven me otherwise… Once the trust has been broken, similarly to everyone else, it is very difficult to get back. As in the physical realm such as it is in the virtual world….. trust issues are at every corner. We put a lot of trust in the people we deal with on a daily basis. Everyone from the people who host my machines to the plugins created for my wordpress installs and the permissions you give Facebook apps.. You don’t realize how vulnerable you are at any given time… do you really know what information they are gathering when you press the “agree to access my information” button on any given app?

With that in mind I became aware that one of my sites (albeit dormant) was involved in a phishing scam. I received a message from RSA.com on behalf of Citibank bringing my attention to the event. Little did I know that it was the beginning of a string of infections that brought my server to a standstill. This particular server holds about 33% of my virtual inventory… so it was a big deal being offlline for over 24 hours. I must give kudos to HostForWeb.com though, they are THE BEST at customer support….. I am a high maintenance customer yet they have been nothing but prompt and courteous during my entire tenure working with their company, which has been several years.

They did a security scan of my server (something I should be doing on a regular basis anyway) and discovered exploits in a plugin that I have been using for quite a long time….. here is a partial transcript of what they found…. I’m not going to bad mouth the plugin until I gather more information, but from my research I am not the only one who has had difficulties…. they have been accused of several shady practices… but again, I don’t have enough info to support any claims… I just know that my server was shut down for at least 24 hours while this mess was cleaned up….

All is well but I’m in the process of removing this plugin from my entire network….. which has proven to be very tedious.

So what have I learned from this mishap?

1. I wish there was a “black list” of sorts that a plugin can get on if there has been anything shady going on with it. You put your domain at risk if you deal with a bad plugin. I think I may create something myself….

2. This reaffirmed in my mind that if you can afford it and have the necessary scale, that you’re better having someone create the plugins needed (there are about 10 core plugins I use) that way there is complete control of the code. Once you have the code, hire someone else to check it to be clear there is no funny business going on. Have checks and balances so to speak. When you install free plugins, there is often a reason they are free.

3. HostforWeb is awesome and top notch in customer service… trust me, I’ve been with MANY providers.

4. It’s important to have redundancy…. If I had these sites on another server or vps so when I had a problem with one, it switched to the other I would have very little down time… Of course the problems I found on one server would have to be fixed on the other one… I could focus on the biggest ones and not necessarily all of them…

5. Double check everything and everyone! Have a checks and balances system in place, something I have actually been working on!

For God’s sake, think twice before giving that cute Facebook app permission to access your information! Don’t assume that Facebook is doing their job at protecting your online safety!

Security is a big deal online and I think sometimes we don’t take it seriously enough…. We allow online scripts and apps to access our Facebook and other social media passwords all along being exposed to the threat that we may have given them the keys to the kingdom. In my case, this exploit just needed my master server password… how it got it? I’m not certain, but it could have been everything from a root kit installed on mine or one of my partner’s computers to a facebook app….. think you’re SAFE because you primarily use a Mac or Mobile device? Keep thinking that…. but you are certainly WRONG. In the end, be careful out there and never assume anything, it’ll get you in trouble every time!

Do you get “stuck” because you think someone has “already thought of that” or “it’s already been done”… I used to think the same thing until I learned it’s ALL ABOUT THE MARKETING. It really is that simple. Who do you think invented the cream filled cookie? If you thought it was Oreo, you would be very wrong. It was actually Hyrox.. have you heard of the brand Hydrox cookies? I know I have and always thought it was an “off brand”.. I’m certain that I’m not alone in this thinking. Just because something has been done does not mean you can’t do it better… perhaps add a feature or simply better marketing… In this day and age, anything is possible. If you are sick of something, sick of being broke, sick of being unhappy, sick of anything, find out how to change it and as Nike says with their brilliant marketing savvy “Just Do It”.

My point is, don’t get discouraged because you think “it can’t be done”, ” someone else has already done it”, “their smarter than me”… blah blah blah. In the end, they are all excuses. We live in a world where information is right at our fingertips… It is possible to get almost instantaneous feedback… We live in the best era for the creative mind to be alive. Do you have access to a computer and the internet? If not, why not? Cliche, but the world is your oyster, their is absolutely no excuse but the excuses you give life to. As you can tell, I despise excuses with every ounce of my being. Below is a post from Forbes Magazine I thought was very interesting titled “Ten Myths About Entrepreneurs Debunked” I thought it was quite interesting…. Enjoy.

First a disclaimer…. I don’t claim to have the secrets to happiness, no one does. I just know what helps me… and what helps “us” is all that matters, isn’t it?

What makes you happy? Seriously, what puts a smile on your face? Different people will give different answers, that’s the beauty of life, everyone is different. Anyone who reads any of my blogs knows I am a big advocate of positive psychology. This emerging field is bursting with new findings that suggest your actions can have a significant effect on your happiness and satisfaction with life. Here are some proven strategies I have found for getting happy…. and trust me I do my research…

1. Avoid comparing yourself to others. This will make you miserable VERY quickly. There is always someone better than you in some capacity, whether it be intelligence, physical appearance , wealth or a myriad of other things you can compare yourself to… if you want to live a cold existence where noone wants to be around you, then make it a habit to compare the cards you were dealt with every one elses’… Life is not fair, it’s not fair for anyone… Make the most of the hand you were dealt and choose to be happy. I have personally dealt with this for a long time… I find myself getting trapped in this way of thinking… break free and appreciate who YOU are as an individual. Cliche as it may seem, there is only one you… and forever more there will be only one you.

2. Put Material Possessions Low on the List. First a footnote, I am not begrudging anyone of having nice things for yourself or family… just don’t make it a priority. Appreciate what you have… The satisfaction of having the new furniture, clothes and other items has a short half life. It is very fleeting.. find happiness in other areas of your life, you don’t have to buy “stuff” to make you happy. Again, this has nothing to do with making goals for yourself or liking nice things… just don’t rank it higher on your list than say, saving money for a house or having an emergency fund – which will provide you and your children much more stability in the future… not to mention for generations afterwards. I have been all about generational wealth lately, but that’s for another time… Suffice it to say, I am not saying don’t be concerned about money, quite the contrary, just don’t depend on the fleeting moment of buying “stuff” to ensure your happiness.

3. Savor Your Day . Again cliche, but stop to smell the roses… it REALLY does help. Think of all the good things and let go of the negative. If you allow positive energy into your life, it will manifest itself by giving you more positive energy and experiences. If you constantly worry about the “bad” in life, you are only calling more of that into your existence. Stop and smell the roses, discover all the beauty the world has to offer.

4. Focus on Positive Relationships – Make Friends and Treasure Family. We all need close relationships, more than just acquaintances and people who don’t really care. Allow yourself to be friendly with someone, smile every once in awhile… don’t assume that everything is bad or wrong… assume it’s good and right…. assume people are all good just for one day.. Be careful, don’t put yourself in harms way… but assume that people are good… try it, see what happens. You will discover that good people will be attracted to you… and you’ll repel the negative ones.. it really does work. Be aware of the energy you are putting out in the world… is it a positive energy, or is it a negative?

5. SMILE EVEN IF YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT – Happy people generally seek out other happy people, opportunities and success. They see the future with optimism and when rewinding the past they savor the high points. Even if you never were in the habit of seeing the glass as half full, with practice it can be second nature.

6. Keep a Gratitude Journal – Write down all the things you are thankful for… you’ll quickly discover that life may not be as bad as you thought… search hard if necessary for the good.. seek and you shall find.

7. Give it all away – No, not literally, but make giving and altruism part of your life; it will enable you to experience a “helper’s high” as I’ve heard it called.. It doesn’t have to be money either, listen to a friend, celebrate their successes, make it about them, forgive those who have wronged you… all of this, believe it or not will contribute to your happiness level. Researchers have found that those who spend money on others instead of themselves reported a greater level of happiness… try it for once… see how it works for you. As most know, I think a lot of Suzie Orman, below is a video I always liked of her speaking on “??? Generosity, sage advice about giving”

8. If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say it…. gossip and speaking badly of others will only allow negativity to seep into your existence… Don’t participate in it and if you speak of someone (there are exceptions of course, another footnote) focus on their positive aspects when communicating with others.

I don’t claim to have the handle on happiness, I too get depressed and have to remember the above… it’s much easier said than done, I realize this… but when you fall, just get back up and try again… it’s all part of being human.

I don’t mean to freak anyone out but you really need to think about the apps you are downloading to your phone. If you do not have internet access you probably do not need to be concerned as much.

You may be under the mistaken impression that your cell phone is safe from viruses. I would venture to say that your mobile device is even more vulnerable than your pc. As more and more people use their phone to communicate, shop online and even do their banking, there is probably more data about you than is stored on your PC. It is scary when you think about it.. You have heard me mention many times before that your cell phone can be used as a spy device by unscrupulous individuals. It is not difficult actually to plant something on someone’s phone. Trojan horses used to be delivered via software downloaded to your computer.. it’s actually still the case. Anti virus companies have done a pretty good job at keeping peoples’ computers safe. Trojans aren’t the only thing users need to worry about.. they also need to be concerned of browser exploits and other dangers. I’m certain You keep your windows machine updated with the latest virus definitions, right?

I’ve been thinking a lot about how vulnerable we especially are in this day and age. In days past hackers were limited to what You entered into your computer; read your emails and steal your banking information. Now they can do that and so much more. Tracking your location, listening and recording your phone calls, spy on your Facebook accounts, monitor the room wherever your phone is located… it truly is a mobile spy device that anyone with about any level of sophistication can deploy. Just be sure not to get on the bad side of some incredulous individual who knows what they are doing… and doesn’t care to do it. If so, better invest in a back up phone and keep it clean and with you at all times.

So you may be asking how do I get these viruses on my cellphone? Basically the same way you get them on your personal computer. If you download apps from the android marketplace or even Facebook apps, you are vulnerable. Doesn’t really matter what kind of phone You have… if it can connect to the internet then you could have a problem.. the funny thing is, you could have someone watching every move You make unbeknownst to You. Who is really behind that app You downloaded on the android Marketplace or Facebook? Worse yet did You pay for an app only to have someone spy on you.. mobile phones combined with the internet make the stasi look like child’s play… protect yourself out there and remember you are creating a written (or worse yet) an audio/video record of everything you do on the phone. Just think of all the “stuff” You store on your your little communicator .. then think of the abilities your phone has… GPS and connection to the internet. Be careful out there and for God’s sake don’t text and drive.

Computer problems, everyone has them…. there are different kinds of problems, everything from the mundane personal software, phone problems to complex networking problems… I am working on a new site to help businesses and individuals alike get answers to their questions by texting, emailing or remote support. I intend on starting with a small staff at first and limiting open hours….

Of course I don’t have the time to run this kind of site… I plan on getting it up and running, hiring some inexpensive labor in the beginning then scaling up. I have spent awhile getting the site set up and still have some work to do.. It will be a nice addition to my family of websites. Go ahead and give it a try… I am still working on the phone however… The infrastructure for this site will also be used to build a “virtual meeting” site similiar to gotomeeting.com. What I’m building will serve many different purposes… it is the same technology, simply wrapped in a different package. I will discuss the new project in more detail sometime later in the week.

Everyone knows I love everything Google, whether it be their operating system, browser or of course their search engine… they have been an innovator on many fronts. Who doesn’t love Google? They are much like myself in that they “try something once”, if it doesn’t work, they try again or try something else… Google is the tech company that never quits. But we all know about Google don’t we..? Let’s talk about their latest innovation, Google Glasses.

So what exactly are Google Glasses you ask? Apparently they look like the Oakley’s below:

Who doesn’t like a pair of Oakley’s? These glasses won’t be your run of the mill glasses though. They will be equiped with processing power. Who would have known there would be glasses with processing power? Supposedly it will have on one lens a heads up display. It is designed to overlay information over a transparent surface: think jet pilots seeing information on their cockpit windshields. Also think “The Terminator” as illustrated below.

Wearers will be able to see incoming texts, temperature, social network updates and I’m sure much more… including advertisements. Just imagine in the future wearing your new Oakley sunglasses walking down the street and seeing advertisements tailored to you and your location. It is utterly amazing how transparent (and thus vulnerable by the way) we are all becoming..

So what about data input? Perhaps you can still use your phone to update your status and write emails, etc. Perhaps in the future you’ll be able to dictate your communications into your Google glasses all while keeping your hands free… I still don’t advocate messing with your techno gadgets while driving, no matter how good of a driver you think you are or how ‘hands free” your gadgets may be. You may be wondering about navigation… Google’s solution is a head tilting to point and click. Get used to using your head as your mouse… for those of you just learning to use a mouse, don’t get too comfortable. Just be careful out there

I’m always wondering what technology will evolve into the next few years… Google may have something here.. can you imagine walking down the street one day interacting with your Google glasses? In the future I guess we can look forward to more distracted drivers… now images will flash in front of them while wearing their high tech specs… we will long for the old days when texting and driving were a problem. It’ll look like child’s play next to this. My advice: save your money and buy yourself a safe high tech car to protect your family with the new breed of goons that will be flooding the streets with their Google glasses. May be awhile… but it’s coming… technology is rapidly evolving. Better be ready..

While we are on the subject of gadgets and technology… technology can’t replace common sense… don’t text and drive or otherwise be distracted when driving a motor vehicle. I think many people don’t realize how vulnerable they are when behind the wheel of a car…. watch the video below to see what could happen…

The following was taken verbatim from my blog at MyMarketingExperiment.com

It’s amazing the world we live in, isn’t it? Do you realize how lucky YOU really are? Seriously, think about it. For starters, chances are real good if you are reading this you live in one of the most powerful, influential and wealthiest places on Earth, the United States of America, where almost anything is possible. One is only limited by their imagination and drive to make things happen. Secondly, chances are excellent that you have an internet connection ( at least somewhere).. I can further deduce that you most likely have electricity and running water. Do you realize how many people in the world do not have any of these things? We take soooo much for granted! You also have the ability to move quite freely within our country… You do not need permission to do so but possess only a valid driver’s license. I’m not going to go off on a legal driver tangent, I have known many to think that “driving” is a RIGHT and not a privilege as set forth by our government. I get a lot of slack for this but basically: Rights can not be revoked except by due process such as a criminal conviction, usually a felony — for example the right to vote. Privileges can be revoked or suspended administratively. If someone is a chronically unsafe driver, they will lose the privilege of driving. They can still come and go as they please, just not by driving themselves. BTW, I do not necessarily agree or disagree with it… it just so happens to be the way of our land right now…. So be clear on what your RIGHTS are as a United States citizen and what your PRIVILEGES are, because they both are entirely different.

I digress however…. you don’t need to be able to drive in order to be a fully functional citizen. You don’t even need to leave the house for that matter. You can envision and create your own income streams directly from the comfort of your home. Tired of getting up everyday at 6AM to work? Tired of your boss telling you how, when and where to do it? It is easier than ever to set the way you want to live your life. The past 10 years and onward to the future are an introvert’s dream. You can not only sustain yourself and family without ever leaving the comforts of your domicile but can entertain them as well. You can buy about anything online (even groceries though you will pay a premium), pay bills, get paid, hire employees, all from the comfort of your home office.
I’m not an introvert, I do like people, thus getting out of my home office is a treat for me. I’ve been known to get into conversations with operators at a call center for hours… ask me what we talked about or how it started and I’d never be able to tell you… I just know it happened. I used to live in a multi-purpose (business and residential) high rise downtown, I’d have to avoid the lobby at times and walk up several flights of stairs just to avoid getting in a big conversation with someone on the way up to my apartment. Many times I would spend hours talking to people in the lobby or hallways of my building….. I enjoy people, I like talking to them… finding out what makes them tick… I don’t regret one second of any conversations I’ve ever had in the confines of those halls… There are other times though that I do not want to be bothered, being alone is the order of the day… Guess I’m moody like that, or so I’ve been told.

My point is, no matter what your personality is, you can have your cake and eat it too in our virtual world. It’s only going to get better. By using creative visualization and positive thinking, creating the world you want to live in is a definitive possibility… and it doesn’t have to be Sim City either.. it can exist outside of your computer’s CPU and even possibly outside of your mind. Get out there and make it happen.

So what you ask does this have to do with marketing? Well as some of you are aware, I am in the process of creating my own communications company…. It will be a combination of white label and systems I create myself… It will entail text messaging and mobile marketing services for several verticals. Because I will be developing my own infrastructure of sorts, I can drive the price down for those early adopters of my services. My mind is overflowing with ideas… my latest idea that I plan on incorporating into my schema is marketing with mobile hot spots. Yes, mobile hot spots, be on the lookout as I discuss my plans on making mobile hot spots a viable marketing solution for those we do business with.

The world is your playground…. Yup, I really mean that. No one on this Earth is better than you.. I realize it’s cliche, but you really can do anything you set your mind to… and it has never been easier in the history of the United States… I truly believe we are living in revolutionary times unbeknownst to a lot of people. Do you realize how many people are actually making a living in our virtual economy. Did you realize you most likely participate but you are on the consumption end? We hear all this hype (crap) of working online, get rich from home, blah blah blah. You need to be weary of this stuff, just as you need to be weary of anything… learn to be a critical thinker. But anyway, back to topic…

First off I want to be clear on what I mean by capital …. I am not referring to capital as a physical asset in terms of this discussion. I am referring to the cash or goods that are used to generate income by investing in different businesses (whether physically or virtually) or even an investment in a physical asset such as a house, apartment building or commercial property. I am defining efficiency as using our available resources (namely capital) to their maximum potential and “squeezing” every penny out of each dollar spent in an effort to maximize income. This is not the traditional definition of capital efficiency but this is the term I’m using to explain how we can leverage the power of the virtual economy, in essence taking advantage of the nontraditional economies of scale that the internet provides.

I am no stranger to outsourcing sites as Elance.com and Scriptlance.com. I have been using them for a decade now….. I have used them from everything to hire someone to ghostwrite for me to develop a windows program that I resold. Naturally, I use them to this day. These sites truly take advantage of the virtual economy. Price is driven by supply and demand and contractors are rewarded when they do a good job… when people positively critique them their demand naturally goes up which increases the price they can ask for their services. It is a shame that these websites did not exist when I studied economics… I just wonder if their is a class on the “virtual economy”… It would be so interesting because it can be studied in such grave detail. You can extract details from companies and find out their business model with one simple keystroke… it is so much easier to find out what a company is about than it used to be. You can easily extrapolate their income based on studying their social reach and keywords they rank for in the major search engines. It is now possible to do a zillion and one case studies for any business related topic you could possibly think of.

Before I go off on a “how the virtual economy” has changed peoples’ lives and standard of living tangent, I want to discuss how the virtual economy can help you save money and maximize the output of your capital. I’m not going to go into the problems of excessive overhead and complexities of starting a typical offline physical business, I’m starting to do that for the first time actually myself… and I intend on blogging about my experiences. I will focus on starting a virtual business from conception to inception… meaning from the day the idea is conceived to the day you open for customers.

For illustrative purposes, I will open a web hosting business…. a business that hosts websites…. if you want a definitive idea of what it entails, check out this Wikipedia link. So what are the steps you would take before you start? You are attracted by the residual income aspects of the enterprise and awe struck by the number of websites that are out there… Furthermore there is this new thing called mobile hosting…. so you are convinced you should start this business and possibly dive into the latter. How would the internet and virtual economy help you in this endeavor? How would you maximize your capital efficiency (remember my definition above) to increase your new company’s income? Yes, you can build your company with never doing the following:

1. Leaving your house
2. Actually having employees in your office and or even “seeing anyone”.
3. Make sales calls
4. Rent office space (see #1)
5. Worry about being robbed
6. Talk to disgruntled customers
7. Worry about employees calling in sick

Now of course, you can do the above, it just depends on what you want to do and your personality….. You can hire people to work for you all online…. and you can do it on the cheap… but depending on your business and your level of trust, you can scale up to have a “real” employee if you so desire. But the cards are yours to play…. Later in the week I will discuss the ”How, When, What and Why’s” of starting your virtual business under the radar of anyone who knows you physically.
