I have several domains registered through godaddy… domains i have acquired by taking advantage of specials they have to offer. my registar of choice is actually namecheap.com… they have free whois protection (for a year) where godaddy charges for the service.. they also offer a feature that will let you easily reactivate domains in your account once they have expired, where godaddy does not.. at least not that I know of.
If you pay Godaddy via paypal you electronically sign a “billing agreement” that basically allows godaddy to charge your account for the renewal registration fee. I am certain this increases their revenue stream dramatically… but really upsets a lot of customers, including myself. A couple of my domains were renewed automatically that I had no intention of renewing.. it really ticked me off.
I reviewed their paypal billing agreement and it said that the option to renew domains automatically was turned on by default… a dirty little trick in my book… it was a classical “gotcha” moment… Godaddy got me.
I have been using the paypal virtual credit card plugin in the past to avoid this very situation. You are assigned a temporary credit card number with an expiration date in the current month and year. So if a company such as godaddy that employs dirty little tricks such as these decides to automatically bill you, you are safe, and you have the ability to cancel the transaction. Once they have your money, it’s very difficult to get it back. After examining their agreement, it looks like their are NO refunds. I won’t be doing any future business with godaddy and will continue to use namecheap.com as my registar of choice. I, like anyone else, hates the feeling of being taken.
